Primary 1 Red News 6th October 2015

Hello to all parents and children from Mr O’Neill.

Thank you for all your support and kind words over the past number of weeks since I began teaching at St Peter’s School. You have all helped me settle into life in the school quickly. I feel really lucky to have the opportunity to work with the wonderful children in P1 Red within such a caring environment.

The children decided to create their own class promises. This is a set of statements that they promise to try their best to keep over the coming year.

Language:

We have been learning the initial letter sounds; s,a,t,p,i,n,r,m,d,e.

We have been using theJolly Phonics stories, jingles and actions to help us with our learning. We have practised writing and forming our letters using our magnetic boards and playdough. We have started to blend our sounds together to create simple words.

Most of our writing this term has been based on the stories we have read during storytime. With help, the children have begun to write simple sentences. Some of the boys and girls have started using their tricky words, capital letters and full stops in their sentences.

This term we are going to be looking at the letters and sounds, c,ck,k,g,l,f,o and we will be consolidating our learning of the letters and sounds that we know already.

Maths:

We have been learning how to count to 10 and to 20. We have worked on writing and ordering the numbers to 10 and finding one more or less than a number. We have been playing lots of maths games and solving puzzles to help us with our learning.

During our new term we will continue to develop our awareness of numbers and will work on our addition and subtraction skills.

Topic:

Our topic last term was “The Weather”. We have learned all about the different types of weather. We have made a weather chart in class and we are recording the weather every day. We have also made our own rain shakers and rainy day umbrella pictures. We have talked and written about our favourite weather, decorated our classroom, read stories about different types of weather and discussed the clothes we wear in different types of weather. Mrs Jadid has done some really exciting science lessons about the  weather and water with us.

We would like to say a big ‘thank you’ to all the parents for helping us gather the materials we needed to make our rain shakers.

We hope you had a lovely October Holiday.

It was brilliant to see all the children back in school and eager to learn on Monday 26th October.
