Primary 4 News!
I hope you all enjoyed a well-earned rest over the October break and the boys and girls in Primary 4 are enjoying being back at school.
A big thank you to those who attended the parent – teacher interviews. It was lovely to meet you and I greatly appreciate your continued support. Please remember not to hesitate in contacting me if you have any concerns or questions regarding your child’s education. You can write a message in their homework diary or arrange an appointment at the school office.
In Maths we have been learning to round numbers to the nearest 10 and 100. We have also started a topic on money and so far have looked at combinations of coins, adding totals and working out change due. We will continue to work on this throughout the term. We will also continue to develop our mental strategies in addition and subtraction and will revise our 3, 4, 5, 6, 8 and 10 times tables.
In phonics we have been revising the ‘i’ phoneme and the different representations of the sound that can be found in words (i, i_e, ie, igh and y).
We have selected some ‘reading for enjoyment’ books from the Accelerated Reader scheme and have tested our comprehension of these by taking short quizzes based on the book. Pupils will be encouraged to take these books home to read as additional practice to their weekly reading book. You can help develop your child’s reading skills by listening to them read aloud every day and taking time to discuss the book with them. After listening to a spooky story in class, we have been learning how to write our own imaginative stories and have looked at how to structure our writing and other ways to make it exciting and engaging. We have also been writing a recount of our class trip to the cinema to see ‘The Sound of Music’. We will now start a new ‘Big Writing’ mission called ‘Homes for Gnomes’ where we will learn how to make notes and gather evidence before using these to write newspaper articles.
Our block of swimming lessons at Northfield have now come to an end. The boys and girls have made great progress in developing their techniques. It would be great if you can encourage the children to keep up swimming as much as they can outside of school. Our PE day has changed to a Monday so please make sure your child comes prepared to school on this day.
For topic we enjoyed a walk around the local area, visiting St Machar Cathedral, The Chanonry, High Street and Kings College. We learned a lot from Mr Martin about the buildings and how they were used in the past and will continue to explore our community more over the next few weeks.
The models of our school that pupils have been working on for homework are fantastic. Pupils have enjoyed showing them to other children in the class and have had the opportunity to talk about them during show and tell. Again, I would like to thank you for taking the time to work on these and I am so impressed with the very high standard of work produced.
