P6 2023-2024

Term 2 – Primary 6

Primary 6 have enjoyed a range of exciting learning experiences this term and have worked very hard. Well done P6!

Literacy

P6 were very inspired by the young inventors we researched in our Inventors and Inventions context for learning. We learned how to write biographies after doing internet research. The class showed wonderful imagination and creativity when creating fictional good/evil inventor characters using the 5 points of characterisation. We have also been working on diary entries, from our own perspectives and those of another person/character. During this time we have also been working on our grammar – ask your son / daughter about M.I.N.T.S!

Maths and Numeracy

Our learning in Maths, on decimals and money, has been very useful to us as we have been able to apply it to our work for the Christmas Fayre and planning our class Christmas Party. We were able to calculate the cost of all the materials for our craft products, and calculate a selling price which ensured we made a profit. In groups we calculated what we could buy to eat and drink for our party, while ensuring we stayed within a strict budget.

Contexts for Learning / Interdisciplinary Learning.

It turns out that Primary 6 are expert coders! Mrs Carrara was very impressed how quickly the class were able to write code for our Micro-bit mini-computers. We could send messages, play games, make lightbulbs flash. Some of our pupils even went to P5 to teach them how to use their Microbits. We also used technology to record ourselves reading stories for the P2s and transferred the files via Bluetooth to their Tonie characters. The class also came up with very impressive ideas for inventions that can help people or improve life on earth.

P6 worked very hard learning the lyrics and practising their singing for the school pantomime, which was a great success. We made a large amount of woolly hat decorations and sparkling candles to sell at the Christmas Fayre.

Trips

Primary 6 have been very lucky to have been able to go on a number of trips this term. We attended a Rugby event at St Machar Academy which was great fun! We visited Absafe to learn about personal safety. In December we visited Aberdeen Art Gallery to participate in their Winter Art Trail. It was such a great experience and we really enjoyed looking at and talking about the art on display. The term is finished off nicely by a visit to the beautiful King’s College Chapel for our Carol Service.

Merry Christmas from P6!
