Pupil Leadership Overview

Our Pupil Leadership groups have been very busy this academic year, working together for the benefit of our school! 

Here is a brief overview of our Leadership Groups and what they have achieved this year.

Leadership Groups:

We have three Pupil Leadership groups: Pupil Council, Learning Council and Junior Road Safety Officers. 

A member from each class is elected to be the class representative for the Pupil Council and Learning Council. Each member develops the skill of: communicating with their peers, teachers and members of the senior leadership team; teamwork; problem-solving; decision making and also the ability to build positive relationships. 

The Junior Road Safety Officers (JRSOs) are a group of enthusiastic primary six and seven members. Each JRSO member is required to apply for their position in writing, detailing why they believe they would make a good road safety officer. Our primary seven JRSOs are involved in the recruitment process.

Learning Council:

We are very proud of all the work we have done this year, and we believe we are making a difference. Some of the projects we have worked on are:

  • We introduced ourselves during assembly and spoke to the whole school about our role and the importance of looking after our learning equipment and resources.
  • We continued to award ‘Learner of the Month’  to pupils in each class focusing on our skills format. Each month the Learning Council and Class Teacher will discuss the skill and nominate a pupil who has best displayed these skills. Our skills include: Literacy; Numeracy; Self-Management; Health and Wellbeing; Digital; Innovation and Social Intelligence.
  • We worked together to plan, arrange and lead an Active Adventure Day with the theme being ‘Highland Games’
  • We produced and issued our own IDL evaluation forms for each class.

Pupil Council:

The Pupil Council have also been very productive this year and have worked on various projects including:

  • We have created posters for the dinner hall, reminding every pupil about our rules when eating lunch and linking them to our school values!
  • We created anti-bullying posters for Anti-bullying Week.
  • We have introduced ourselves at assembly, encouraging anyone to come to us with concerns or suggestions on how we can make our school even better
  • We monitor and maintain our ‘Pupil Council Visitor Questionnaire’ These questionnaires tell us how visitors feel about coming to our school. They let us know if we are welcoming, friendly and following our school values!
  • We created posters reminding our pupils to take care of our toilets, cloakrooms and gym hall.
  • We went on a Learning Walk looking at our school, resources and wall displays
  • We discussed wet play and the activities that we would like to do when we can’t get outside to play.

Junior Road Safety Officers (JRSOs):

The JRSOs continue to be an enthusiastic, dedicated group who strive to promote road safety within our school. This year they have been actively involved in:

Our Work So Far:

  • Road Safety Awareness Week. We made it our mission to let our parents and carers know that they need to follow the rules to keep our pupils safe!  We patrolled the kerbside, handing out informative flyers and displaying our posters.
  • We have launched our ‘Be Bright Be Seen Competition’
  • Beep Beep! Day: We organised this event for all primary 1-3 pupils. We visited each classroom, raising road safety awareness and advising children about the importance of wearing seat belts and using a car seat. We organised games for them to play, songs to sing and also gave each child information to take home with them to share with their parents
  • Every year we order ‘Go Safe with Ziggy’ books for all P1 children. The JRSOs read the books with the pupils in their classroom before they are sent home. 
  • Working with Fiona from Walk Wheel Cycle Trust on air quality monitoring: Over the past few weeks the JRSOs have been installing diffusion tubes around the local area, studied lichen (an indicator species of air quality), looked for particulate matter using microscopes and collected their diffusion tubes to be sent off for testing. The results are due to be shared with our pupils at the beginning of the new school year.
  • Active Travel Plan: We have conducted ‘Hands Up’ surveys with both pupils and staff to find out how we get to school. We have also identified some safe areas for our pupils to ‘Park and Stride.’ This information will be used to create next year’s Active Travel Plan.
