Primary 5 are enjoying their project about bridges.
This week we have been learning about suspension bridges!
We became a human suspension bridge in order to learn about the function of the towers and cables in suspension bridges. Two of us stood face to face with our hands out, acting as the road in the bridge. When someone gently pushed down on our arms, the bridge broke easily. We found that when there were people holding our shoulders, and acting as the towers and cables of the bridge, our arms forming the bridge were much stronger than they had been before.
We were then given a challenge to create our own suspension bridge using only art straws, wool and sellotape. Using what we hard learned about the structure and function of suspension bridges we had to work together in our table groups to design and create our own bridge.
In maths we have been learning about volume. We have enjoyed using water in order to estimate and measure the capacity of items in our classroom. We have also been learning to convert milliliters into liters.
In art we have been looking at the French artist Monet. We learned about his life and about his impressionist style of painting. We have been re-creating his Japanese Garden picture. We have not quite finished yet, but here are some photos of the works in progress…
We are looking forward to learning about famous suspension bridges tomorrow!
On Friday we are going the university for a special China day. We are looking forward to seeing lots of schools (including our own P7s) present their learning about China in the morning. In the afternoon we are going to have two workshops, making a Chinese dragon and Tai chi. We are also going to watch Katarina and Eleanor in P7 and P6 sing and play a Chinese song in front of all the schools there!
