March Update from P7.

We can’t believe we’re into March. 2016 has flown in so far in P7.

Jacobites

Our topic this term is the Jacobites and we have been following the amazing and exhilarating battles that took place towards the end of the 17th Century and throughout the 18th Century. We have been learning the different details of the Jacobite cause and researching famous names who played a large and crucial role in piecing together the Jacobite story. We have also been investigating the weapons used by the Jacobites, the food they ate, the places they travelled to and how they got to these places. More recently we have researched the battles of Culloden and the Glencoe Massacre which has been really interesting! – Hector and Radek

Maths

We are currently studying Shape, Position and Movement in P7. We have looked at properties of 2D and 3D shapes and the different ways 3D shapes are composed by studying their nets. We have also learned more extensively about the different types of triangles and their different angles. We will be moving on to work with co-ordinates next. – Harry and Kaiden

Literacy

In P7 we have been basing most of our literacy activities around our novel study – “Wonder” by R.J Palacio. “Wonder” is a fantastic book centred around the main protagonist named August (Auggie) Pullman. Auggie is 10 years old and has several deformities which have resulted in him being home schooled until the age of 10. We join Auggie in the novel as he is preparing for mainstream schooling and experience his anxieties and low points as well as his high points. There are also really funny parts which have made this a real page turner. Auggie has a dream to be normal. He
is fed up with being stared at for all the wrong reasons. However as we have learned together “you can’t blend in when you were born to stand out.” – Emilia and Karolina

P.E

This term P7 have been practising Badminton in P.E with Mrs. Armstrong. We have been working on our flexibility and accuracy skills to help us reach our shots and put them into the right places! We really enjoy our badminton games and compete against our classmates. (Of course we don’t take everything too seriously and we have fun each week!). We look forward to learning more bat and ball skills in the coming weeks! – Liliana and Jacky

Ab Safe

A few weeks ago, P6 & 7 visited Ab Safe in Aberdeen to learn lots of new things about health and safety. During our visit we learned how to be safe on the road, around trains and at train stations. We also learned a lot about fire safety and the dangerous points within different rooms in our house like the kitchen and living rooms. It was a fun filled day with lots of learning involved! – Oskar K and Julia Ko

Confirmation

Lately the children in class have been preparing for the Sacrament of Confirmation. We have been trying our best to work hard both in class and at home to understand fully the commitment we are making when we make our Confirmation. We have picked our sponsors and our Saints’ names which we gave a great deal of thought to. On the 26th February we had a beautiful class Mass where some of the candidates were enrolled in preparation for receiving the Sacrament of Confirmation. Others in the class were enrolled at St. Columba’s church on 28th February. We also received a visit from Bishop Hugh who came to talk to us about what we have been learning during Catholic Education Week. During this year of Mercy, we have learned about the different physical acts of mercy as well as the spiritual acts of mercy. We have studied stories such as the Parable of the Good Samaritan which has allowed us to see what acts of mercy look like. – Olivier

Football

St Peter’s football team has kicked off! The school has got a brand new kit. It’s blue and looks really smart! Everyone has been so excited to go to training since we started on the 25th January 2016. For training we have been working on our passing, shooting and dribbling. For the last twenty minutes we have a match among ourselves. Our coaches are Tom, Bennet and Mr. McFadden. Our home games are on the Astroturf pitch at Seaton school at 11am. Fixture lists have been given to those in the team. – Olek, Zach and David.

Rotary Quiz

Success in P7 as we won first prize in the Rotary Quiz! We faced 6 other schools and came out on top in the quiz which had nine rounds including: Media, Sport, Numbers, Books, Geography, History, Living World, Famous People and General Knowledge. Well done to our team on the day. Special well done also to their classmates for supporting the team whilst they were studying for the quiz and being great reserves.

Bikeability

Bikeability training is being provided by two members of Aberdeen City ‘Adventure Aberdeen’ team, assisted by Miss Munro who is our school Cycling Champion. This is open to all P7 pupils whether or not they have their own bikes. Last year, some children used bikes owned by friends, taking turns with different aspects of the training but completing all aspects of the course. If your child has his/her own bike, it would be better for them to use that please. The trainers are required to check that all bikes are safe.

Letters have gone into bags with information regarding training sessions with a form attached that is required to be filled in and brought back to school. The first training session is Tuesday 8th March. Thank you.

Homework

Homework activities are designed for the children to work both independently and with the support of help at home. Activities are based on topic work, literacy work and numeracy. We now have a fantastic new software programme called Lumio Maths. Lumio can be used both in school and at home. It tracks their progress in different maths topics and takes them through a practice, study and challenge format. Lumio maths logins have been allocated to the children with great results already.
