Term Four So Far…..
Contexts for Learning / Interdisciplinary Learning.
P6 have thoroughly enjoyed the “Silver City by the Sea” context for learning. We had a very exciting visit to Aberdeen Airport and we learned a lot about how the airport works and how important it is to the local area. A class favourite was meeting a police puppy in training!
We had the pleasure of a visit from Deacon Duncan to talk about his work for the Stella Maris organisation, which supports seafarers who arrive in the North-East of Scotland. We learned about how challenging life working at sea can be, and how many workers are exploited by their employers. Deacon Doug talked about all the ways in which his team help those in need, from cheering chocolate, to visiting those injured and in hospital, and being there for those who are finding life difficult. Deacon Doug asked us to pray for him and his team, which we will do. Thank you, Deacon Duncan, this was a perfect visit for our Silver City by the Sea context for learning.
We have also enjoyed conducting research on the maritime history of Aberdeen, the oil industry and the new Aberdeen South Harbour. We presented our findings to the class. We had a lot of fun with art, making sea creatures from recycled plastic, northern lights art and creating our own street-art inspired seagulls.
We also enjoyed a workshop with Greyhope Bay, learning about the nature in and around the coast of Aberdeen.
The second context this term is “We are the Champions!” We will be learning about different sports, tournaments and participating in potted sports, school sports day, and learning about the skills needed for ice hockey and how to play pop lacrosse!
We will also be rehearsing for the school show, which is Olympic-themed and will take place on the 27th June.
Literacy
We began writing this term with a book review of our beloved class novel, Wonder. We learned about the importance of justifying our opinions in a review. Linked to our context for learning, we have been using our imaginations to write “messages in bottles” and desert island diary entries. We have also been practising writing recounts using our trip to the airport, and letters of thanks to the Airport Staff and Deacon Duncan.
Maths and Numeracy
P6 have been working hard on fractions, decimals and percentages with Mrs Carrara and co-ordinates and algebra with Mrs Kelman.
RERC
Primary 6 led the celebrations for the Feast of the Ascension Mass on 9th May. The class did readings, prayers, the offertory procession and the altar serving. Well done P6, it was a beautiful Mass. We have also been learning about Mary and the significance of the month of May.
