Term 3 in P5

We are starting this term with an IDL ‘Our Cultural Scotland’ which will last from 6th January to 7th February 2025 . We will learn about Scottish language, traditions, food and famous Scottish landmarks.

We will:

  • enjoy learning Scottish traditional dances and
    take part in class ceilidhs.
  • participate in art, poetry and music competitions.
  • create art work and poetry inspired by Scottish culture and explore our own artistic interests
  • have mini “Burns suppers” in each class
  • take part in whole school Burns Day celebrations
  • have parent open afternoon on Thursday 30th January

From 13th February till 28th March 2025 our IDL will change to ‘Our Historical Scotland‘.

During this IDL we will learn about Mary Queen of Scots. We will:

  • Create a virtual museum on Google classroom which the wider school community can access. 
  • Host class museums where pupils will have the chance to showcase their learning to other learners (Friday 28th March 2025).
  • Take part in Active Adventure Day on Friday 28th February (games from the past theme).
  • Host parent open morning (learning together) on Friday 21st March

Literacy

During literacy lessons we will learn to write a diary based on 2 events from Mary Queen of Scots life, write our own poems using the Scots language and features of poetry, write a newspaper article based on an event from Mary Queen of Scots life and write a book review based on our class novel. We will also learn to use our reflective reading skills to understand texts better and further develop our reading skills by working on ‘ The Butterfly Lion‘ book by Michael Morpurgo.

Numeracy

This term during numeracy lessons we will revise our knowledge of reading time on analogue and digital clocks. We will also learn to estimate and then measure how long tasks or events take and what we can achieve in a given time period, tell the time on 24 hour digital clocks, relating this to 12 hour clocks and talk about how people plan their lives using times and dates. Finally, at the end of term we will start learning about position and movement. We will explore how to describe and make journeys using the eight compass points and use coordinates to plot points, and describe positions and movements on a grid.

RE

During RE lessons we will learn more in depth about the story of Epiphany and take part in Epiphany mass at school. We will also read Bible stories about miracles and discuss how miracles showed the compassion Jesus had for people and he did not want to see them suffering unnecessarily. We will also discuss different Sacraments, their importance and their meaning. At the end of term we will prepare for Lent and Easter. Read Bible stories related to Easter and discuss fasting, prayer and almsgiving.

PE

Our PE lessons will take place on Thursdays this term. We will learn skills required to play badminton. We will also participate in RADS sessions on Tuesdays. Please remember your shorts/tracksuits, trainers, t- shirts (no football kits) for PE lessons.

Homework

Our homework will include numeracy tasks, reading books and spelling words. Numeracy homework will be posted every Monday and should be finished by Friday.
