Term 1 in Primary 7
We are nearly at the end of Term 1 and P7 have settled into their new class and school building well. Not only have we been busy with our learning but we have also become ‘buddies’ to the new Primary 1s. We have been reading to them in the library and playing with them during break and lunch times. We also worked with the Primary 1 and Primary 1 / 2 classes to organise, prepare for, and run a coffee morning, raising funds for MacMillan Cancer Support!

Details Of Our Learning in Term 1
Literacy
We enjoy reading and selecting our own Accelerated Reader books to read daily for enjoyment and challenge. Reading groups have been established along with regular Reflective Reading lessons. Writing has been linked to our contexts for learning ‘Our Democratic World’ and ‘Myths and Legends.’ These topics offer many opportunities for writing from many genres, including persuasive letter writing, recounts and imaginative story writing. Listening and talking opportunities are also linked to our context for learning topics.
Numeracy
Our current mathematics and numeracy focus is ‘Whole Number.’ Over the coming weeks, we will be looking at the importance of: place value; addition; subtraction; multiplication; division; order of operations and negative numbers.

Health and wellbeing
We are delighted to have the opportunity to work with our sports coach Gregg on a weekly basis. These sessions are linked with the skills we will be developing during our PE slots.
During our gym lessons this term, we have learned more about fitness and also focused on improving our hockey and tennis skills.
Our health and wellbeing lessons this term were based on the indicators Safe and Healthy, from the SHANARRI wheel.
We took some time to remind ourselves about the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. We worked together to identify some articles which we consider important to us and to children around the world. We have included these articles in our Class Charter.

Roots Of Empathy:
Our Roots of Empathy programme is well underway and we are delighted to have this year’s Tiny Teacher Baby Glen and his mum visit us. Through the development of the baby, we are learning about empathy, neuroscience, temperament and the power of love!

Contexts For Learning:
For the first 4 weeks of the new term, our context for learning was looking at ‘Our Demographic World.’ Primary 7 had the opportunity to learn about democracy and the history of our voting system. We looked at the role of an MSP, the government and parliament. We created our own Polling Station and Ballot Box for our own class election. We were also visited by our local councillor Karin Van Sweden. We also spent some time learning about the history of our voting system and the work of the suffragettes!
‘Myths and Legends’ is our second focus (starting in September until 13th November), where the class are given the opportunity to rewrite fairy tales and also create stories of their own. We will also be addressing stereotypes in fairy tales along with creating some artwork linked to the topic. We will be creating a whole school Fairy tale and also acting in our ‘Play In A Day’ session later on in term 2.
