Term 3 In Primary 7

Happy New Year from us all in Primary 7!
We are very excited to be starting our third term and are looking forward to many more learning experiences and having lots of fun.
Please find below a brief overview of our planned learning this term:
Interdisciplinary Learning
We begin the term by celebrating Robert Burns and learning about Scotland.
This month, we will be learning more about the bard himself, whilst taking the opportunity to learn some of our wonderful Scots Language through poetry, writing and song. We will be participating in drama, singing, poetry and dancing activities, whilst completing our Scottish themed learning with a Highland Games themed Active Adventure Day and whole school ceilidh.
In February, we will begin our new context for learning ‘Our Global World’ where primary 7 will have the opportunity to learn about Malawi and more about Africa in general during ‘Africa Week.’. This context will provide us with the opportunity to learn about different African cultures, stories, music and traditional food. We will also have the opportunity to learn about Malawi, comparing life there to life here in Scotland.
Literacy
Taught Writing opportunities are linked to our IDL contexts. We will be learning to write our own poetry, then using Scots language to create poems inspired by Burns. Imaginative writing opportunities based on famous Scottish landmarks and mythical creatures will also be written this term.
Our class novel this term is The Explorer by Kathrine Rundell and our reflective reading lessons will be based on this novel. Daily reading opportunities through Accelerated Readers and reading groups will continue.
In Listening and Talking, pupils will be encouraged to recite Scottish poetry in our competition and to be kind and respectful audience members, providing their peers with constructive feedback.
Numeracy
To begin the term, we will be looking at fractions, decimal fractions and percentages. We will be learning to create equivalent fractions and we will be able to express them in their simplest terms. We will also be learning to calculate simple percentages of a quantity, and use this knowledge to solve problems in everyday contexts, for example, calculate the sale price of an item with a discount of 15%.
Towards the end of term 3, we will be learning more about expressions and equations.
Health and Wellbeing
During ‘Our Global World’ learning, we will be tasting some traditional Scottish food, whilst also paying attention to their nutritional values!
We will continue to learn from the SHANARRI indicators, this term focussing on being Active, Respected and Responsible.
PE lessons this term will consist of ceilidh dancing, volleyball and gymnastics. Sports sessions will also continue on a weekly basis.

We are so lucky to continue our Roots of Empathy learning with our ‘Tiny Teacher’ Baby Glen and his mum Lindsay. Glen is teaching us a lot about ourselves, how babies develop and how our temperament traits determine how we react in different situations. We are beginning to realise that everybody has feelings and we must treat others with respect and kindness.
Home Learning
Homework is set and published on the Google Classroom every Monday with the expectation that is completed for the Friday of the same week.
We have also set some Home Learning Challenges with suggestions of activities that pupils could do at home, linked to our IDL topics.
This term we will be having class poetry and singing competitions which will be judged later on in January.
