P1 2025-2026

Term 3 in Primary 1

We hope you all had a lovely restful Christmas break and are looking forward to the term ahead like we are! Here is what we will be learning this term.

Numeracy

For the first 6 weeks we will be focusing on money. We will learn to identify, name and recognise all coins and understand their value. We will engage in activities such as ordering coins from smallest to biggest amounts and adding values of coins using concrete, pictorial and abstract approaches. We will also explore using different coins to make the same amounts which will link in with problem solving skills for the term. Lastly, we will learn to identify change needed when paying for items.

Our second topic this term is Measurement. We will explore measuring height, length, weight and volume using non-standard units and hands-on resources. We will compare and order measurements and learn important vocabulary such as heavier, lighter, longer and shorter. We will explore area and learn how to measure the area of simple shapes.

Literacy

We will continue our Read, Write, Inc. sessions four times a week, with a focus on blending and reading CVC words using Fred Talk and “pinching the sounds” to support decoding.

In taught writing, our learning will be linked to our contexts for learning. Our first context is ‘Our Global World’, with a focus on Scotland followed by Africa/Malawi. During our Scotland focus, we will use our imagination to create our own Scottish characters, settings and short stories. During the Africa focus, we will explore functional writing by creating fact files about African animals.

Our final taught writing focus for the term will be poetry, which will link with our final context for learning, ‘Our Spiritual World’.

Contexts for learning

Our first context for learning will focus on Scotland and Africa/Malawi in ‘Our Global World’. During the Scotland focus we will have lots of opportunities to explore Scottish dance, music, artists and poetry. We will also take part in our very own Scottish Ceilidh. We are looking forward to tasting traditional Scottish foods and taking part in Burns Day celebrations. We also explore Scots language and Doric. During Africa, we will take part in a Cultural dress day and create art pieces linked to Africa. We are excited to take part in ‘Afritales’, an African storytelling event and An Active Adventure Day exploring African games!

Our final context for learning is ‘Our Spiritual World’ with a focus on Islam. We will celebrate our own faith and learn about other key celebrations and festivals in Islam.

We are looking forward to a very busy term ahead and will update you very soon!
