Happy New Year from P5.
It was fantastic to see all the children back to school last week enthusiastic and ready to learn.
Miss Ross is back with the class and will be working closely with them for the next three weeks.
We had a visit from an officer from the SSPCA this week. We enjoyed listening to Jackie and learned a lot about how animals should be looked after.
Maths
We have just started a block of learning about Money and Finance. This week, the children have been learning about the different ways that they can pay for items. They will be going on to compare special offers to find out the best deal and learn to shop within a budget.
Language.
For the next two weeks the children will be exploring the “sh” phoneme in their spelling. The children have identified words which have the “sh”, “s” and “ti” representations of the “sh” sound.
The children will be continuing to improve their personal writing before going on to explore instruction writing and imaginative writing, which will be related to their project work.
The children have also begun to develop their listening comprehension and problem solving skills with Mr Campbell.
Project.
Last week the children were very excited to find out that their new project for this term will be “World War Two” with an emphasis on the Home Front and what daily life would have been like during 1939 – 1945. The children have been learning about how the war began and have approached this topic in a very sensible and mature manner.
Thank you for your comments at Parents’ Night regarding project homework. The children will be working from a grid again: they will be able to choose two tasks each week that interest them. Following requests at Parents’ Night, project homework will now be handed out on a Friday and will be due in for the following Thursday. The websites below will provide the children with appropriate information for their homework.

In P.E during January the children will be learning Ceilidh dances, in preparation for the school ceilidh at the end of the month. The children have been very responsible in these classes and have enjoyed helping the primary one children to learn the dances.
Next Wednesday the children will be starting a block of 4 Philosophy lessons at the university from 10.45-11.45am. The children are really looking forward to exploring what philosophy is. Previous classes in the school have received philosophy lessons and the children have always responded extremely well to these lessons. Parent helpers would be welcome to help to walk the children to and from the university. If you would be able to help, please contact the school office or see Miss MacDonald. Thank you.
The Primary five class will be performing the Passion Play this year. The children will perform the first half of the play on Maundy Thursday (24th March) and will perform a Resurrection play on Easter Monday (28th March). The children are very much looking forward to performing the play. Our drama lessons this term will be focused on preparation for this special event.
