P1 Red News
Hello to all parents and children from Mr O’Neill and P1 red.
Primary One Red have settled very well into their first school year. The weeks have just flown by.
The children have been helping to create our own class Golden Rules. They have promised to try their best to keep the rules and behave kindly towards one another.
Maths
We have been learning how to count to 10 and to 20. We have worked on writing and ordering the numbers to 10 and to 20 and finding one more or less than a number.
We have been playing lots of maths games and solving puzzles to help us with our learning. We have started to use our cool Numicon shapes to help us with our learning.
We have started to learn about adding groups and sets together and the different ways we can make totals up to 10. Next term, we will continue to develop our awareness of numbers and we will work on developing our basic addition and subtraction skills.
We are going to learn about flat shapes and solid shapes.
Phonics
We have been learning the initial letter sounds; s.a.t.i.p.n.
We have been using the ‘Jolly Phonics‘ stories, jingles and actions to help us with our learning. We have practised writing and forming our letters using our magnetic boards, playdough, sand and pipecleaners. We have started to blend our sounds together to create simple words.
Next term we will be learning the sounds r.m.d.e.c.k before going on to begin our reading during the term.
We are working hard at our writing lessons each week. Most of our writing this term has been based on the fairy tales we have read during story time. With help, the children have begun to write simple sentences.
Topic:
Our topic is ‘People who help us’. The children have been learning about the people who help us in the school and in the community. We have turned our house corner into a role-play hospital and have had lots of fun dressing up as doctors, nurses and paramedics.
We were very lucky to get a visit from our local police officer PC Hayley.
We have started our drama and PE lessons with our specialist teachers. We got to move our bodies and use our imagination in loads of different ways. Our PE lessons will take place on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
We have been learning about our daily routines. We had our first ever school dinner in the school hall. Our buddies helped us to line up, tidy up and get ready for playtime. After lunch we do our tooth brushing.
Thank you for all your support and kind words over the past number of weeks. I feel really lucky to have the opportunity to work with the wonderful children in P1 Red within such a caring environment.
Our homework will be given out every Tuesday and returned on Mondays. If you have any questions about our homework, please contact me. I hope you all have a lovely October Holiday.
