Primary 6 News – Term 1
Maths
In maths, we have been rounding numbers to the nearest 10, 100 or 1000. We have also been rounding numbers with decimals.
We have also been learning about measurement. The boys and girls are now experts at converting metric units, measuring lengths accurately and calculating the area and perimeter of some complex shapes.
In mental maths, we have been focusing on the four operations: addition, subtraction, division, multiplication. Some of us are needing a bit of practice at home with this. Remember RM easimaths, sumdog and Education City can all be accessed from home. If any child needs a reminder of their passwords, please let me know!
Literacy
We start each day with “word of the day”, allowing the children to learn new vocabulary. It has been great to see these new words popping up in their writing. In writing, we have been focusing on film reviews, autobiographies, and biographies. We have written film reviews on two short Disney pixar movies; Boundin’ and Lava. The boys and girls have been learning the similarities and differences between autobiographies and biographies. We have also written our own autobiographies and have been researching people who inspire us to write a biography based on them.
Health and wellbeing
Our topic this term has been focusing on resilience and bouncing back, adjusting to school after the lockdown. We have been learning about resilience, promoting hope and promoting gratitude. The pupils have been keen to share their knowledge in this area and created some beautiful inspirational posters. We have also been looking at the resilience alphabet with Mrs Martin at assembly each week.
Expressive arts
The Primary 6 boys and girls are a creative bunch. They created these amazing “Behind the mask” portraits along with some Picasso inspired self-portraits. They also created an optical illusion with some op art.
We have been having online lessons with Mr Horton which has been great fun. We have been learning about note values like crochets, minims, semi breves and quavers and the importance of rests in music.
Technology
This year, the Primary 6 boys and girls have a chrome book each in the classroom which has been an excellent resource. They use these daily in all curricular areas. They have been becoming more familiar with using the read write toolbar in their writing tasks when redrafting their taught writing.
We are very lucky to have Mr Campbell working with our class this year. He has been teaching the pupils some coding and the pupils have been eager to share their “dance parties” on the google classroom.
Outdoor learning
We have been enjoying having our daily “brain breaks” in the afternoon. The pupils have been coming up with fun activities and teaching them to their classmates.
The boys and girls did a great job tidying our school garden with Mrs Martin!
Reminders
Please remind children to bring a water bottle to school every day. Nothing else from home should be brought in except a school bag, lunchbox, and a piece of snack. Hand sanitiser is readily available in school. Children should not be bringing in their own.
Homework will start again after the September holiday. Homework will be shared and submitted on the google classroom.
Marvellous me is being used regularly to keep in contact with parents. Well done to the boys and girls in Primary 6 who have earned virtual house points this term!
