Happy New Year from Primary One Blue.

Primary one blue have settled back into school very well after their Christmas holidays and are working as hard as ever.

They have now learned about all 26 sounds in the alphabet and are working really hard to blend these sounds into words. Thank you for continuing to read with your child each night and for practising the “tricky words” that are sent home each week.

At the beginning of January we were learning about symmetry in maths. The children loved using mirrors to see symmetry in objects and they created beautiful symmetrical patterns.

We have now started learning about subtraction. The children are working very hard to learn subtraction facts to 10. There are games to support their learning in maths on Education City (usernames and passwords are in the back of your child’s reading diary.)

Throughout January the children have been engaging in our whole school “Scotland” topic. The children have been learning about where Scotland is in the world, some Scottish traditions, stories and myths. This week the children will be learning about Old Aberdeen, our local area.

Last week the children participated in some special events to celebrate Robert Burns. On Wednesday they enjoyed ceilidh dancing with the older classes. The children worked very hard to learn 3 ceilidh dances!

On Friday they participated in a whole school Burns assembly where each class showed off some of the things that they had been learning during the Scotland project. Primary one blue showed their learning of Scots by singing two songs; ‘Ally Bally’ and ‘Heid, Shouders, Knees and Taes!’ They did very well and sang confidently to the whole school.

The children are starting a gymnastics block with our P.E teacher Mrs Armstrong. Thank you for sending your child to school with a gym kit (shorts and a white t-shirt) and gym shoes so that they can participate fully in these lessons.

In R.E we have been learning about how God created the world. We read the story and then worked together in our table groups to make our very own book all about creation.

We enjoy using our book to help us to remember how God created the world.
