P2/3 2023-2024

Term 3 – Welcome back to P2/3

We wish you a happy new year and hope you enjoyed the festive break. Here is a little update about what will be taking place this term.

IDL – Contexts for Learning

8th January – 9th February – ‘Let’s Celebrate’:

  • We will be learning ‘The Flying Scotsman’ and ‘The Virginia Reel’ and take part in a whole school Ceilidh with live band.
  • There are Burns competitions shared on Google Classroom that learners can engage with.
  • Opportunity to try Scottish foods
  • Each class will get a chance to write a part of a whole school Scottish tale.

15th February – 28th March – ‘How’s the Weather’:

  • There will be weather-related science experiments throughout Science Week.
  • We will be looking at cloud formations and through outdoor learning will explore this in more depth.
  • We will be using cooperative learning strategies to research different types of weather and put this information into reports.

Literacy

We will be continuing to use Read Write Inc to support literacy skills across the curriculum. Our taught writing will be linked to our two contexts for learning this term. In our imaginative writing we will be developing a character, focussing on their appearance, actions, attitude and speech. We will use Scottish stories/themed books to inspire this. We will then move on to personal writing, where we will be learning to create a diary entry relating to experiences we are involved in at school. Finally, we will create functional pieces, including science and weather reports; when we explore the changing state of water and the weather in the local area.

Numeracy

Continuing with a Maths Mastery based approach to learning in numeracy, we will build on  concrete and pictorial understanding before moving on to more abstract applications.

We will be exploring rounding and estimating. Learners will be using various strategies to do this such as number lines, number squares, playing cards and cubes.

We will then move on to subtraction and use different strategies and materials to support us with this. These will include; numicon, base 10s, number lines and the column method.

We will also cover money, exploring coins and notes, solving money-based problems, making amounts and giving change.

Finally, we will have a stand-alone topic of Data Handling throughout this term, where we will use tables, pictographs, bar graphs and tally marks to read and collect data.

Health and Wellbeing

This term we will be covering the Included, Respected and Responsible wellbeing indicators. We will be learning more about what it means to feel included in social settings like meals, how to respect ourselves and others and discuss our responsibilities at school and in the wider community. We will also continue to have our Roots of Empathy classes, focusing on understanding our own and others feelings.

The class has loved this experience so far. Here are some views from the class:

Dahunsi – “We like that Baby Juliet gets to see us and we get to see her”

Beomhinya – “I like that we get to sing her songs”

Kamsi – “We get to see her emotions”

Eric – “I like to ask our tiny teacher’s Mum questions about her and I like to see her”

Emmanuella – “I like all the drawings we make”

P.E days will continue to be on Tuesday and Wednesday.

A reminder that homework is shared on Google Classroom, Oxford Owl and Education City. If you require help with getting logged on please get in touch.
