P2 2023-2024

Term 4 in P2.

The children are back from their Easter holidays rested and ready for their final term in Primary 2.

Literacy.
The children will continue with their learning to read lessons this term.

In writing the children are starting with a block of imaginative writing, learning to include a beginning, middle and end their stories.
Our next block of writing the children will learn to write non-chronological reports about sea creatures. They will learn to include headings, facts and pictures in their reports.
The final block will be a block of personal writing related to our “We are the champions” context. The children will write about their experiences and think about times when they have been a “Champion”.

The class will continue to develop their spelling through learning to read groups, within all writing they will be focused on using these spelling sounds to inform our spelling.

Maths
The class will start with a block on Multiplication and Division.
In multiplication the class will begin with doubling numbers. They will learn to link that with the two times table. The children will learn to create arrays of equal groupings to support the learning of the 5 and 10 times tables.

The children will begin to explore the concept of division through splitting objects into a number of equal groups. They will also use arrays of equal groupings to support their learning of the concept of division within the 2, 5 and 10 times tables.

The class will then move on to learn about fractions. They will explore halves and quarters of both shapes and numbers. The class will learn the concepts numerator and denominator. Finally, the children will also learn to compare the size of fractions and where they would sit on a number line between 0 and 1.

One day a week this term the children will have a measurement lesson. First the children will learn to measure length and height using non standard units (for example, hands, feet, paperclips) before measuring length and height with centimetres and metres. The children will then learn to measure weight, again with non standard units before going on to weigh with grams and kilograms. Finally the children will use water to measure volume and capacity in milliletres and litres.

IDL
Our first context, until 31st May, is Silver city by the sea. Primary two will be focusing on Under the sea as their context. The children will learn about a range of sea creatures that live in the North Sea. As part of this context, the class will be going on a trip to Greyhope bay to learn about marine life along the coastline.

Our final context this year will be “We are the Champions”. The class will be learning about a range of local sporting people, and what makes them champions. The children will learn about what they are champions of. The children will be preparing for our special Olympic themed concert by learning 2 songs from Australian artists.

Health and Wellbeing.
In P.E the class will be learning about athletics for their first block. They will focus on running, jumping and throwing skills in preparation for our sports day. Our second block will focus on the skills of striking and fielding. The children will learn to use these skills within the game of Rounders. The class will continue their Tuesday RADS sessions.

Mrs Kelman will continue Health and Wellbeing lessons this term. First the class will focus on learning to keep active. Later in the term the children will learn to keep safe in a range of settings.

I am looking forward to seeing the children progress even further in their learning throughout this last term in P2.
