Pupil Leadership Overview

 2024/20205

Our Pupil Leadership groups have been very busy this academic year, working together for the benefit of our school.

The aim of our Pupil Leadership groups is to enable our pupils to take on leadership responsibilities within school, ensuring their voices and opinions are heard and acted upon. These leadership groups encourage our pupils to take on leadership roles, develop skills and contribute to a more positive school environment.

Here is a brief overview of our Leadership Groups and what they have achieved this year.

Leadership Groups:

At St. Peter’s R.C. Primary School, we have three Pupil Leadership groups: Pupil Council, Learning Council and Junior Road Safety Officers.

A member from each class is elected to be the class representative for the Pupil Council and Learning Council. Each member develops the skill of: communicating with their peers, teachers and members of the senior leadership team; teamwork; problem-solving; decision making and also the ability to build positive relationships.

The Junior Road Safety Officers (JRSOs) are a group which comprise of enthusiastic primary six and seven members. Each JRSO member is required to apply for their position in writing, detailing why they believe they would make a good road safety officer. Our primary seven JRSOs are involved in the recruitment process.

Learning Council:

We are very proud of all the work we have done this year, and we believe we are making a difference. Some of the projects we have worked on are:

  • Planned and developed a Google Form for each class in order for them to evaluate completed context for learning (topic work) on a regular basis.
  • Introduced ourselves during assembly and spoke to the whole school about our role and the importance of looking after our learning equipment and resources.
  • Introduced ‘Learner of the Month’ with a focus on our skills format. Each month the Learning Council and Class Teacher will discuss the skill and nominate a pupil who has best displayed these skills. Our skills include: Literacy; Numeracy; Self-Management; Health and Wellbeing; Digital; Innovation and Social Intelligence.
  • Planned, arranged and led an Active Adventure Day with the theme being ‘Highland Games’
  • Contributed to updating our Home Learning Policy

Pupil Council:

The Pupil Council have also been very productive this year and have worked on various projects including:

  • The Cost of the School Day: The pupil council were shocked to learn how much a school day could potentially cost parents / carers. They got together and offered ideas to Mr Sturrock with the hope of reducing daily costs.
  • Christmas Fayre: They organised, advertised and collected for the Christmas Raffle.
  • Our School and Community: The Pupil Council looked at plans for the new school and were able to ask questions and find out more about the new build and what it may look like when complete.
  • VoiceBox Competition: VoiceBox is a national joke telling competition for primary school children developed by the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists to raise awareness of the fun and importance of communication. The Pupil Council asked all classes to come up with a funny joke. All pupils voted from a selection of jokes and decided on our winning submission from Chizoba in P3. Chizoba’s joke made it to the final at the Scottish Parliament, well done Chizoba!
  • Anti-Bullying Policy: The Pupil Council were consulted in updating the Anti-Bullying Policy
  • Anti-Bullying Week: The PC will be planning activities and raising awareness of bullying in November 2025.

Junior Road Safety Officers (JRSO)

The JRSOs are an enthusiastic, dedicated group who strive to promote road safety within our school. This year they have been actively involved in:

  • Launching a road safety awareness campaign and competition
  • Plan, prepare and oversee road safety awareness games
  • Organise activities for Beep Beep! Day with the younger classes
  • Working with Fiona from Sustran they have created a map of safe routes to school, including park and ride locations and crossings in the local area.
  • Active Travel Plan
  • Recorded a video to raise awareness of road safety around our school. This was shared with all pupils and links sent to parents to also view
  • Scooter Sessions for all classes
