Welcome to Mrs Haigh’s Primary 2 Class

Vicki Haigh

Welcome to a new school year in Primary 2! We are excited to begin Term 1 and look forward to getting to know one another as we build our class community and settle into new routines. This term is packed with exciting learning opportunities across the curriculum.

Class Information

Mr Dougan will teach PE on Wednesdays, support NLF coaching on Tuesdays, and teach French throughout the year.

A reminder that pupils should wear full school uniform each day. On Wednesdays, pupils may come to school wearing suitable PE clothing along with their school jumper.

As the weather can change quickly, all pupils should bring a jacket to school every day. We also ask that children have an indoor pair of shoes to change into after break and lunch.

Please remember:

  • Water bottles should be brought to school daily.
  • Children should have a healthy snack for morning break.
  • Homework will be posted on Google Classroom.

Maths

This term we will focus on developing number skills and confidence with numbers to 100.

Our learning will include:

  • Number sequencing and ordering
  • Identifying numbers before and after
  • Missing number activities
  • Number recognition
  • Partitioning numbers
  • Addition strategies
  • Continuing and creating sequences

We will also be exploring 2D and 3D shapes, learning to identify them in our environment and describe their properties.

Daily counting practice is an important part of our learning, and we encourage families to support counting activities at home whenever possible.

Literacy

We will continue to use the Read Write Inc. programme to support pupils’ reading, spelling and phonics development.

Our literacy work this term will focus on:

  • Developing reading fluency and comprehension
  • Practising sounds and word recognition
  • Listening and talking skills
  • Building confidence in writing
  • Imaginative writing
  • Instructional writing

We greatly appreciate parental support with home reading and homework activities.

Interdisciplinary Learning (IDL)

St Peter’s is Where We Belong

During the first part of the term, we will focus on our class and school community.

Children will:

  • Learn about what makes each of us unique
  • Share information about their homes and families
  • Explore the importance of belonging
  • Learn about the different roles within our school community
  • Develop understanding of children’s rights through the UNCRC
  • Create a class charter together
  • Participate in pupil council elections and learn about democracy and having a voice

As part of this topic, we will also visit St Machar’s Cathedral to explore the importance of our wider community.

Inventors and Inventions

Later in the term, we will begin learning about inventors and inventions.

Children will:

  • Learn about famous inventors and their impact on the world
  • Carry out science investigations and experiments
  • Explore resilience by learning that inventors often need to try many times before succeeding
  • Design and create their own inventions
  • Learn about sustainability and renewable energy

We will be collecting recyclable materials later in the term to support this project.

Religious Education

Our RE learning will focus on God’s love and the uniqueness of each person.

Together we will explore the message:

“God made each one of us carefully and wonderfully. Nobody else in the world is exactly the same as you.”

Children will:

  • Reflect on what makes them special and unique
  • Learn about Jesus blessing the children
  • Discuss how Jesus showed kindness and how we can do the same
  • Write prayers thanking God and asking for His help
  • Continue to build prayer into our daily school life

We will also:

  • Attend our Start of Year Mass
  • Celebrate Mary’s Birthday
  • Learn about the story of the Annunciation

Expressive Arts

Music

Music lessons with Ms Hamilton take place on Wednesdays.

This term we will:

  • Explore shape through song
  • Learn about pitch and tempo
  • Develop confidence through singing and listening activities

Art and Drama

Children will create a variety of artwork linked to their learning, including:

  • Self-portraits using black pen techniques
  • A class shield for our school parade celebrations
  • Planet artwork linked to our science topic

Through drama, pupils will:

  • Role-play emergency situations
  • Develop confidence and communication skills
  • Create freeze frames based on different stories and scenarios

Health and Wellbeing

We will begin the year by focusing on being safe.

Children will:

  • Learn who helps to keep us safe
  • Discuss safe choices and behaviours
  • Participate in role-play activities involving emergency situations

We are also hoping to welcome a visit from our local Fire and Rescue Service.

In addition, we will explore:

  • Healthy lifestyles
  • The importance of exercise
  • Looking after our bodies
  • How exercise strengthens our hearts
  • Understanding heart rate

Physical Education

PE lessons will focus on:

  • Listening and following instructions
  • Coordination and movement skills
  • Teamwork
  • Cooperation
  • Developing fitness

Science

This term our science topic is Space.

Children will investigate:

  • The Solar System and its planets
  • The differences between planets
  • The Earth, Sun and Moon
  • How the Earth rotates around the Sun
  • Phases of the Moon
  • The changing seasons
  • Nocturnal animals and their habitats

This is always a very exciting topic and provides lots of opportunities for curiosity and discovery.

Supporting Learning at Home

Families can support learning by:

  • Reading regularly with their child
  • Practising counting and number recognition
  • Completing homework activities on Google Classroom
  • Discussing class topics and encouraging curiosity

Maths homework will begin after the September long weekend.
