Happy New Year from P1 Red.
Happy New Year! 2016 is going to be a very special and busy year for P1 red. It is great to be back in school again after our Christmas holidays. We can’t wait to get started with our learning again!
Literacy:
We are continuing to have our reading lessons on Wednesdays and Fridays. We have received an amazing new set of Collins Big Cat reading books that the children will be reading this term. We hope all the children and their families enjoy reading these wonderful new books.
Over the next few weeks we will be learning the sounds h, w, j, v, y, z, q(u), x, sh, th, ch and ng.
We will be working on building, reading and writing short CVC words from the sounds we know and we will use our Jolly Phonics jingles, our magnetic boards and Education City games to help us with our learning. We are learning to:
Say the word. Make and break the word into the different letter sounds. Blend the sounds back together.Read the word. Write the word.
We will continue to have our taught writing session on Thursday morning. So far this term we have been learning about describing words and using them to write sentences about the characters in the stories we read in class.
Numeracy:
This term we will be continuing to learn about addition and subtraction and to develop our number work. We will be introducing the children to money. We plan to have a lot of fun finding out about all the different coins and using them in our role play games.
Topic:
Our topic this term is Scotland. We will be using Linda Strachan’s wonderful series of Hamish McHaggis books to introduce the children to different places in Scotland and to find out about the different aspects of Scottish culture. The books touch on wildlife, Scots language, Scottish history, Scottish culture and many different aspects of travel and tourism in this beautiful country.
Homework
Homework will continue to be handed out on a Tuesday and collected on Monday. If you require any information regarding homework, please don’t hesitate to ask. Maths, Language and Topic activities are given as homework and your support is appreciated in helping further the children’s learning at home.
Advent Service 2015
The whole school walked down to Kings College at Aberdeen University and took part in a beautiful Advent Service. We joined in to sing hymns and carols to celebrate the end of the school term as we prepared for Christmas day. We walked with our P7 buddies and it gave the P1’s and the P7’s a chance to have some time together on the walk to and from the service.
Drama:
We are continuing with our brilliant drama lessons with Mr Horabin this term. We have taken part in various activities based upon the ‘Hansel and Gretel’ fairytale. Mr Horabin made the story come alive and the children got to watch one another perform in different roles on the stage. We even got to make up our own stories and to act them out!
Thank you for all your continued support as we enter 2016 here in St Peter’s.
