P6 February news

Hello from Primary 6! January brought about a lot of changes in the Primary 6 classroom and we were full of mixed emotions! We were sad to say goodbye to Mrs McFarlane before Christmas and we wish her all the best in her new school. We were very lucky to have Mr Melville back with us for the month of January and we wish him all the best in his teaching career!

We have been very welcoming towards Miss McLoughlin as the new primary 6 teacher. Miss McLoughlin taught P6 last session and so she is very familiar with the curriculum and resources. She taught us on Fridays last term and already knows each child well. Miss McLoughlin teaches us most of the time and Mrs Bain will take the class on a Thursday.

This term, homework will be handed out on a Tuesday and returned on a Monday. Each week, homework will include a literacy, maths and topic task alongside reading activities. Thank you for your ongoing support. I have been pleased to see that the children have produced some excellent pieces of homework!

Thanks to Mrs Armstrong for all the hard work she put into organizing the ceilidh. We all enjoyed trying out some new and old traditional ceilidh dances. The primary 6 boys and girls were excellent role models to the younger classes during ceilidh practice and should be very proud of themselves.

In honour of Robert Burns, we created some excellent poetry along with some very imaginative haggis creatures. We presented this work at our school assembly.

We had great fun in taking part in the ‘Jammin Fitness’ workshop with Andy learning a wide range of dances. We also learned important tips for presenting information in front of a crowd which we found very useful.

We were invited by Bishop Hugh to celebrate Candlemas in St Mary’s Cathedral on Tuesday February 2nd. It was a lovely ceremony!

Our topic this term is the Victorians. We have some very exciting trips lined up including Haddo House, a Victorian classroom, the Maritime Museum and a Victorian street trail. So far, we have learned about the reign of Queen Victoria, the Victorian classroom and Victorian artists such as Matisse. Classroom activities, homework tasks and independent research will enable the children to have a broad understanding of this era in our history.

Our class novel is “Holes” by Louis Sachar which we are really enjoying. This will be read as a class and we will use active reading strategies together to explore the text. There are webquests and useful links exploring the themes of Texas, homelessness, bullying and treasure here. http://eduscapes.com/newbery/99a.htm

In maths, we have just completed a block on time and are now moving on to information handling. Education City and Lumio homework tasks will be assigned for homework in the coming weeks. All pupils have passwords and anyone who cannot access the websites should contact the school office please.

Well done to our boys and girls in Primary 6 who put in a lot of hard work in practising for the Euroquiz team. Congratulations to our team and reserves who were chosen after much deliberation: Andrew, Adam, Henry, Maja, Oliwier, Oliwia and Valentine. We wish them all the best in their continued study!
