Primary 5 February news
Hello from Primary 5!
We are excited to have started our new topic, the Home Front during World War II. We sat in rows and practised ducking for safety when we heard the siren. Some of us brought precious artefacts for ‘show and tell’ and others shared memories of their great grandparents going to war. We also watched a couple of videos about the war on BBC iPlayer. We’ve started to research different aspects of the war individually or with a partner.
In Maths (Algebra), we have learned that a letter can represent a missing number. We can also recognise square and cube numbers, use a function machine that operates on numbers in two steps and work out which side of an equation is greater than the other.
Next, we are going to learn how to solve simple equations by balancing both sides of the equation. Our next topic in maths is how to tell the time accurately to the nearest minute to and from the hour on digital and analogue clocks. We are also getting better at calculating time intervals.
Art
We made our own gas masks. We also made name tags which showed our name, address and date of birth.
Literacy
We imagined we were evacuees and wrote about our experiences and feelings while we were away from our families. We also wrote instructions about how to make a model gas mask.
Netball/ Gymnastics
We have started learning how to play netball with Mrs Jadid. We were excited to have our first netball match.
Mrs Armstrong is teaching us gymnastics like cartwheels and round-offs. Some of us did very well.
Lent
We wrote our Lent poem in our best handwriting and promised to be on our best behaviour. We will also pray more and collect money for the charity SCIAF as we learned about some people needing money in other countries.
