Happy New Year from P7
Hello and welcome back to our class page! We hope you all had an amazing Christmas and New Year and we are looking forward to making a great start to 2017. We have only been back a week but it seems a lot longer. We know there are busy times ahead and we can’t wait to carry on our good work. We are very happy to have Miss Alford back in P7 for the next month.
Literacy
This term P7 have started a novel study with the book ‘Wonder’ by R.J. Palacio and P7 are absolutely loving the amazing novel! Lots of our literacy this term will be taught through this book. ‘Wonder’ has many different themes such as sorrow, anger, laughter, empathy and lots more. It will really teach P7 that life isn’t always fair for everyone but, as the main protagonist reminds us, “you can’t blend in when you were born to stand out.”
We will continue to work through reflective reading activities both in class and as part of our homework. We enjoy answering the different types of questions from this.
We are making great progress with our Accelerated Readers and lots of us have been doing star reader tests and increasing our ranges. We love the twenty minutes we get each day, reading the books of our choice. When we finish the books, we take a quiz on the PC and collect points to increase our ranges. We are taking part in the First Minister’s Reading Challenge where we challenge ourselves to read as wide a range of books as possible and log these books in our journals.
As well as reading, we have been also been working on our spelling and grammar as we look forward to writing new and imaginative stories of different genres.

Jacobites
This term we are starting a new topic. We are really excited to learn about the Jacobites. The Jacobites were rebels who were not happy with the monarch. They decided to do something about this and gathered troops together for two main uprisings in 1715 and 1745 with mixed results. At the start of the topic we were given the chance to share what we already know about the Jacobites and also what we would like to find out. We have displayed this in our jotter and our KWL chart which we will fill in as the topic goes on.
We have our very own Jacobite soldier living with us throughout this topic we voted that we will call him Charlie McIntosh. Charlie will help us through our journey from the 17th to 18th Century.
We are really looking forward to learning about:
- The different leaders, commanders and generals.
- The different battles that took place.
- Tactics deployed by each army.
- Allies of the Jacobites
- Allies of the Redcoats
- The end result – was it all worthwhile?
Stay tuned to watch our progress in this topic!

Health and Wellbeing
We have been very busy learning about health and wellbeing. We have been working and finding out how healthy we are and we’re looking at ways we can improve. We have been crossing health and wellbeing with our maths work as we display how many times we walk to school, exercise and go to sports classes on different charts.
Before the Christmas holidays, lots of people in our class and other classes were doing school football training. The problem was we didn’t have a lot of time on the pitch because of weather not permitting us but we used football to improve our exercise and, with hopefully better weather ahead, we hope to be playing for St. Peter’s in our league matches very soon.
Through circle time and mindfulness activities, we reflect and evaluate the days and weeks that go past. We are also using ‘Wonder’ as a way to think about others and to be kind, show empathy and be helpful to everybody like the characters in the book.
In P.E all the classes have been doing Scottish country dancing. We do this every year and it helps us get fit and healthy. Aside from that kind of P.E, we also do lots of other sports with Mrs. Armstrong like volleyball, badminton, netball and basketball but there are so many more and this also contributes to health and well being. We use cyber coach in class to learn new dances and workouts inside our classroom.
Lastly, we have been doing football practice with two coaches from the Aberdeen Football Club Community Trust who take some classes every Tuesday in the morning. It’s been great fun!

Maths
This term so far, P7 have been learning about Information Handling. We have made Bar Graphs, Line Graphs and Tally Charts showing information. We have also shown the different ways in which we can interpret information. For example last time we studied the weather throughout the week, and we had to show this data in Line Graphs, Bar Charts and Pie charts.
In mental maths we continue to work on different strategies to help us get better and more confident when recalling our number facts. My favourite games just now are ‘Hit the Button’ and ‘Around the World’. We like to work out different ways to find the answer to a problem and defend our answer when we are asked about it.

R.E
It is 2017 and we are really looking forward to R.E. Every year P7 prepare for a special sacrament called the Sacrament of Confirmation and this year it is our turn. During the week we continue to learn about the different Bible stories and parables such as the parable of the Good Samaritan , the parable of the talents, and many more. Last week we put a modern twist on the parables we have learned and acted them out for the rest of the class to watch our interpretations of them.
As we prepare for our Confirmation, we will be learning about different saints who inspire us in different ways. We will be looking at our own personal saint and finding out more about what we do and who they were. We will have a better understanding of how the Holy Spirit helps us and becomes a huge part of our lives.

Digital Leaders
We are in the process of creating a new team made up of some P7 pupils who will be known as the Digital Leaders. This will be a group/partnership similar to House Captains and Pupil Council where each pair will have great responsibility in helping the younger children in the school.
The chosen pair will develop and inspire smaller school pupils to gain confidence when working with our IT equipment such a I-pads and chromebooks. We hope to give them an early head start on technology. We will be showing them different apps and websites to help them in the future of our technological devices. Watch this space!
