January 2017 in P5/6
We hope you all had a very happy Christmas and New Year!
Although we have only been back at school for a couple of days P5/6 have been very busy getting back to their learning.
Our student teacher Miss McNicol has returned to complete her final four weeks of placement here at St. Peter’s School. We are all delighted to have her back with us.
January’s Learning
Language and Literacy:
- Weekly spelling and phonics
- Taught Writing – imaginary and biographical
- Grammar – abstract nouns and possessive nouns
- Accelerated Reading
- Guided Reading
Our class novel is ‘The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe’ by C.S. Lewis. The children are thoroughly enjoying the story line and participating in exciting activities relating to this!
Mathematics
Over the next few weeks we will be looking at 2D and 3D shapes, nets of shapes, angles leading into compass points and directions. Daily Mental Maths opportunities will continue.
Topic
Our new topic this term will be ‘Discovery and Exploration.’ In January P5/6 will be investigating the life of the famous Scottish explorer David Livingstone. We will also be learning about the famous ship RRS Discovery (docked in Dundee) and its travels to the Antarctic with captains Robert Falcon Scott and Ernest Shackleton!
Health and Wellbeing
This month the children will be learning about the importance and benefits of having a good night’s sleep.
RE
We will be learning more about some of the miracles that Jesus performed.
PE
Gym lessons with our specialist teacher will continue to be on a Monday morning and class gym slots will be every Friday.
Gentle Reminders
Please could all children have suitable gym kit and gym shoes in school at all times.
Homework will be issued on Mondays and should be completed and returned for the following Friday.
